Nigeria don support di launch of one 100-Day Tourism Calendar wey dem design to gather Nigeria festivals, concerts, cultural events and lifestyle experiences on one single digital platform as part of efforts to unlock di projected $100bn tourism and creative economy.
Dem unveil di calendar, wey MyCityApp and MyLagosApp dey power, for di Ember2Remember National Stakeholders' Conference for Victoria Island, Lagos, according to Dr. Nneka Anibeze, di Senior Special Assistant to di Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, on Tuesday.
Di initiative target to maximise di economic potential of di September-to-December festive season by connecting visitors, Nigerians for diaspora and local consumers with events and tourism experiences across di country.
Speaking for di event, Musawa talk say di government dey try move beyond just seeing di festive period as season of celebration only, but instead turn am into platform for job creation, investment and business opportunities.
Musawa talk say, "Dis initiative na about moving beyond di traditional concept of festive season. E concern deliberately organising, packaging, promoting, and monetising one of di most economically active periods for our national calendar."
She explain say tourism dey generate opportunities across plenty sectors, including aviation, transportation, hospitality, entertainment, retail, technology and di creative industries.
"Every visitor dey create value chain — from aviation and transportation to hotels, restaurants, entertainment, retail, technology, artisans, and local communities. Inside these value chains na where opportunities for businesses, jobs, investment, and livelihoods dey," di minister talk.
Musawa urge state governments, event organisers, tourism operators, hospitality businesses and other stakeholders to upload their activities wey dem schedule between September and December onto di national calendar.
She talk say di platform na to provide one single destination where people go fit discover tourism and cultural experiences across Nigeria.
"We want to create one single, credible, and compelling platform through which Nigerians, di diaspora, and international visitors go fit discover wetin dey happen across Nigeria. Imagine person wey sit down for London, New York, Johannesburg, or Toronto go fit see, for one place, di extraordinary experiences wey dey available across Nigeria," she talk.
Di minister commend di Chief Executive Officer of MyCityApp, Ifeoma Chukwu, for driving di initiative and call for broader participation by states and private-sector operators.
Earlier, Chukwu talk say Nigeria fit realistically build $100bn tourism economy if dem deliberately package and monetise di cultural assets and visitor experiences. She cite how tourism dey contribute to major global economies, dey argue say Nigeria target suppose dey seen as achievable rather than unrealistic.
"When we talk about building $100 billion tourism economy, e fit sound ambitious. But globally, di evidence dey tell us say e dey achievable," Chukwu talk.
She add say, "Di question no be whether $100 billion tourism economy possible. Na: why not Nigeria?"
Di initiative come as di Federal Government dey seek to diversify economic activity beyond oil by expanding di contribution of tourism, culture and di creative industries to national growth.
