State governments across Nigeria don start to take more preventive measures afta Federal Government release dia 2026 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO), wey predict sey serious flood go happen for many parts of di country.

Di report wey Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) present for Abuja on Wednesday, show sey Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Adamawa, Kebbi and 28 oda states dey at risk, and thousands of communities fit be affected for different levels.

As dem dey present di report, di Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, talk sey early warning systems still dey very important to reduce di bad impact of flood. E say if dem give information on time, e fit save lives, protect people work and property, and safeguard infrastructure.

According to di report, 14,118 communities for 266 local government areas across 33 states and di Federal Capital Territory dey inside high flood-risk zones. Anoda 15,597 communities for 405 LGAs dey inside moderate risk, while 923 communities for 77 LGAs go experience small flood.

Di AFO also warn sey flash flood and urban flood fit happen for big cities like Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Kano and Port Harcourt, becos of heavy rain, bad drainage system, and poor town planning.

Coastal and riverine flood also dey expected for Bayelsa, Delta, Lagos, Rivers and Ogun states, becos sea level dey rise and tidal surges dey increase.

Utsev talk sey dis flood outlook no be just scientific paper, but na call to action for all levels of government and citizens.

E urge state governments make dem consider flood risk when dem dey plan land use, improve drainage infrastructure, and make sure sey communities wey dey vulnerable prepare well.

E also talk sey im ministry dey work with Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to combine weather and water data so dat dem fit give better forecasts wey go guide farmers, disaster managers, and town planners.
