Di Federal Ministry of Education don give approval for National Examinations Council, NECO and West African Examinations Council, WAEC, to increase di registration fee for dia Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE, to N50,000 per candidate, starting from 2027.
Dis increase make National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN, Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, and one former vice president and presidential candidate of African Democratic Congress, ADC, vex well well. Dem talk say na another punishment for parents and guardians wey dey struggle already.
Di exams dey hold for internal candidates wey dey finish dia Senior Secondary School education. WAEC just finish dis year exam few weeks ago, while NECO own still dey go on.
Di increase go make NECO SSCE internal exam fee jump from N30,000 per candidate to N50,000, while WAEC own go jump to di same amount from N27,000.
One memo wey approve di new rate, wey dem date June 18, 2026, and sign by Director of Senior Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Adeniji Ibrahim, on behalf of di Minister of Education.
Di memo, wey dem send to Registrar of NECO, read: “Re: Upward review of registration fees for examinations conducted by NECO
''Di West African Examinations Council don request for upward review of examination fees for Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates from 2027.
“You fit remember say for one meeting of examination bodies wey dem hold with di Minister of Education on March 31, 2026, where dem talk about di need to increase exam fee, di Minister of Education direct say West African Examinations Council and National Examinations Council should adopt one uniform fee for WAEC and NECO SSCE.
“So, dem direct me to tell you say di Minister of Education don approve di sum of Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) only, as di new examination fee for candidates from NECO SSCE internal 2027,” di memo talk.
