Leaders in Africa have congratulated Arsenal following their first English Premier League title win in 22 years on Tuesday.

The London side is one of the most hugely popular European football clubs in Africa and draws throngs of enthused fans who watch its televised games.

After finishing second for the past three seasons, Arsenal finally made it over the line to win its first English title since Arsene Wenger's "Invincibles" in 2004.

Kenya’s President William Ruto praised the club’s “epic adventure” which he said had been marked with times of struggle, crushing setback and recovery.

“We have witnessed the power of hope, resilience, focus and relentless hardwork in action, and watched a team of dedicated professional do battle against formidable adversaries, matchday after matchday,” he said in a post on X social media.

‘Faith and dedication’

Ruto said the victory had vindicated the team’s faith and dedication.

Rwanda’s Paul Kagame highlighted the country’s partnership with the London club through the tourism campaign of #VisitRwanda.

He commended the team for a “well-deserved title”.

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema, who will be seeking re-election in August, fused his campaign messaging with a congratulatory post to Arsenal for the win.

“Even though we totally disagree on one of the most important issues, during this busy political week, let me acknowledge the opposition for a moment… Congratulations to all Arsenal supporters,” he said in a Facebook post.

Arsenal will formally be presented with the trophy on Sunday after their final match of the season at Crystal Palace.

They could still make it a historic double as they chase their first Champions League title in the final against Paris Saint-Germain later this month.
