The White House is considering a plan to buy the Chagos Islands from Mauritius, the Telegraph reported on Sunday.
US officials have drawn up a proposal to bypass Britain and make their own deal to take control of Diego Garcia, the report said.
Reuters could not immediately confirm the report, and the government of Mauritius was yet to formally file a response to the reported proposal.

Chagos Islands, which have been under British control for tens of years, have been the subject of a long-standing court case, in which Mauritius seeks full control over the islands that host a joint US-UK airbase.
In 2021, a United Nations court gave a ruling in favour of Mauritius, stating that the United Kingdom lacks sovereignty over Chagos Islands.
