Imagine having your sister as your best friend for more than 100 years? That’s the story of Levita, 109, Zoraide, 104, and Zulina, 103. They are the world’s longest-living trio of sisters, according to Guinness World Records.
Together, these remarkable Brazilian women have lived a combined 316 years — and counting.
So, what’s the secret behind their longevity?
Scientists from the University of São Paulo are studying their DNA, hoping to discover why they have remained physically and mentally healthy despite their unusually advanced ages.
Researchers believe they may be carrying some "protective" genes that grant them healthy ageing.
But the sisters believe their story began long before modern genetic studies. They grew up in rural Brazil, where life revolved around family, natural food, and hard work.
Their mother breastfed them as babies. As they grew, home-grown vegetables were a non-negotiable part of their meals. There were no refrigerators, no processed food.
They swam in rivers, caught fish, gathered crabs, and spent their days moving. Healthy living had simply been a natural way of life.
However, the journey for each has been different.
Levita, the eldest, became a second mother to her younger siblings while their parents worked in the fields.
Born on 7 June 1917, she never married or had children. Her love for knitting and sewing became both a passion and a profession.
Even today, Levita wears socks she made herself. Her sister, Zoraide, was born on 24 November 1921.
Zoraide became a teacher before dedicating her life to nursing, all while raising five children.
She believes good health starts from birth, crediting her mother’s care and nourishing food for the foundation of a long life.
The youngest, Zulina, was born on 4 March 1923. She raised six children and never lost her love of sewing and embroidery.
When her marriage ended, she moved to Rio de Janeiro to live with her two sisters. Decades later, they are still together under one roof.
They joke with each other and argue from time to time. But their life is full of joy and smiles.
They say they are each other’s best friends and greatest source of comfort and companionship.
As scientists continue the search for the biological secret of longevity, Levita, Zoraide, and Zulina offer something equally valuable: love, resilience, gratitude, and family bonds are crucial for healthy living.
