South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has chosen Roelf Meyer to be his country's next ambassador to the United States, Ramaphosa's spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told Reuters on Tuesday.
Bloomberg News reported earlier that Ramaphosa was poised to tap Meyer as South Africa's next envoy to the United States.
Meyer is a veteran negotiator who was the chief representative of the white minority government in the negotiations to end apartheid in the 1990s.
Ramaphosa was the chief negotiator for the African National Congress, the liberation movement at the time.
In March 2025, the US expelled then-South Africa's ambassador to Washington, Ebrahim Rasool, citing undiplomatic remarks against President Donald Trump's administration.
