Somali referee Omar Artan has signed a sponsorship deal with Somali remittance and financial services firm Dahabshiil Group.
The firm said the deal was aimed at promoting youth development and elevating Somalia’s global profile.
Artan made history as the first Somali to be selected to officiate at the 2026 World Cup finals. He is among the 52 referees announced by FIFA to officiate the June-July finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
The sponsorship deal reflects Dahabshiil’s efforts to support sports development and inspire young people, while highlighting Somali achievements on the international stage, the firm said in a statement.
Artan’s rise has been seen as a milestone for Somali representation in global sport.
He previously officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations 2024, when he made his debut at the continent’s flagship competition, and in 2025 took charge of the CAF Champions League final, another first for a Somali referee.
Officials say the appointment underscores growing recognition of Somali talent internationally and is expected to encourage a new generation pursuing careers in sport and beyond.
