Tanzania’s former energy minister Deogratius Ndejembi has been sworn in as the country’s vice-president at a ceremony held in State House in the capital, Dodoma.
The 43 year-old replaces Emmanuel Nchimbi, who resigned from the position earlier this week.
Ndejembi has pledged loyalty to President Samia Suluhu Hassan and promised to serve all Tanzanians regardless of their political affiliations.
He was nominated to the position by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, before being unanimously approved by parliament on Friday.
‘Heavy responsibility’
In her remarks after the swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, President Samia urged her new vice-president to mature quickly to the tasks of the role despite his young age.
"Let me take this opportunity to offer my sympathies, Honorable Ndejembi. We have placed a heavy responsibility on your shoulders at a young age without prior consultation; I am truly sorry about that," said President Samia.
She described Ndejembi’s appointment as a reflection of her government's commitment to handing leadership roles to the youth.
The president the new vice-president to demonstrate integrity in the role.
"The position is a trust bestowed upon you by Tanzanians—through the CCM party and the Parliament of Tanzania. Therefore, go and serve them without discrimination."
