Approximately 1,000 people gathered at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) for an open iftar, the meal that Muslims eat to break their fast at sunset during the Holy month of Ramadan.

The iftar, organised by Turkish state aid agency, TİKA, in conjunction with the IUIU, was attended by university students of all faiths and community members.

Several students, who spoke to TRT Afrika at the iftar, said that the event brought a sense of togetherness, uniting Muslims and members of other faiths.

"It is my first time attending an open iftar, marking my first experience of this kind. I think it is important to have many more of such ceremonies,” Tracy Mutoni, a student of IUIU, said.

University's doors open to everyone

Turkish Ambassador to Uganda Fatih Ak commended IUIU for opening its doors to students from all religious orientations.

He added that Türkiye remains open to supporting communal events that help create inclusive environment for students and all Ugandans.

Professor Ismail Gyagenda, the rector of IUIU, welcomed all members of the public to the university.

TİKA’s country coordinator in Uganda, Murat Cetin, said he was honoured to support the event, adding that the Turkish state aid agency had undertaken various projects at the Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU), including donating advanced laboratory equipment to the university’s Habib Medical School.
