Archers from more than 50 countries have gathered in Istanbul, Türkiye, for the 2026 International Conquest Cup, one of the world's biggest archery competitions.

Held from June 3 to 7, the annual tournament commemorates the 1453 conquest of Constantinople, the city now known as Istanbul. The competition takes place at the historic Okmeydanı Archery Foundation grounds, where some of the world's best archers are competing for medals, prize money and valuable ranking points.

First launched in 2013, the International Conquest Cup was created to celebrate Türkiye's rich archery heritage while promoting cultural exchange through sport.

For many athletes, the event offers more than just competition.

"The significance of archery for me is going back into history, for our religion as well and the conquering of Istanbul from the Romans to the Turkish Ottomans," Moni Hendriks, an archer from South Africa, tells TRT Afrika. "The thing I'll take away from this event is the experience."

Largest civilian archery event

The tournament is recognised as the world's largest civilian archery event and is unique because it brings together three different disciplines—classical bow, compound bow and traditional bow—under one competition.

Athletes from across the globe test their skill, precision and mental strength as they aim for top honours.

"Archery helps me stay focused on my goals because it is a sport of concentration," Gadika Kofi Stefan Asher from Côte d'Ivoire tells TRT Afrika.

For many competitors, the event is also an important stop on the international archery calendar. The tournament is recognised by the World Archery Federation, allowing athletes to earn ranking points that can improve their standing ahead of major competitions.

Preparing for world tournament

Belgian archer Phil Stinkins says the tournament is an ideal opportunity to prepare for upcoming international events.

"It is a really fun sport. You have the material, the technique and also the mental game, so I really enjoy it," he says. "This competition is really nice preparation for the World Cup in Antalya because the weather is similar and you're already in Turkey. It's good preparation for the World Cup."

Beyond the competition itself, the International Conquest Cup has turned Istanbul into a meeting point for athletes, cultures and traditions from around the world.

Visitors attending the event can also enjoy arts and crafts workshops, concerts and a variety of activities for children, making it a celebration that extends far beyond the archery range.
