The convoy of Nigerian opposition politician and presidential hopeful Peter Obi came under attack in the southern state of Cross River, with police arresting a suspect, authorities said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday shortly after Obi and his entourage visited the palace of the Obong of Calabar, the city’s traditional ruler, while traveling to a town hall meeting organized by his Nigeria Democratic Congress party.

Attackers armed with machetes and sticks hurled stones and other objects at the vehicles, smashing windshields and causing panic among supporters and traders in the area, according to police and local media reports.

The Cross River State Police Command said it had arrested a 27-year-old suspect, identified as Victor Edet Yellow Duke, in connection with the incident. An investigation is underway.

Political targets

The attack followed a similar incident days earlier involving African Action Congress presidential hopeful Omoyele Sowore in Ekiti State.

Political parties are stepping up preparations for the 2027 general elections, with President Bola Tinubu seeking a second term under the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Obi, have put forward competing proposals to address insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges.

The upcoming vote next January will have security challenges and economic recovery strategies as key flashpoints in swaying voters.
