Kenya’s women national team captain Mwanalima “Dogo” Adam stepped onto European football’s biggest stage on Tuesday night, becoming the third Kenyan woman to feature in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The 29-year-old forward started for Danish champions HB Køge against Arsenal at Meadow Park and played for 80 minutes, as the visitors came within seconds of securing a famous draw before a stoppage-time penalty settled a fiercely contested contest.

For long periods, Adam and her Køge teammates frustrated Arsenal, who struggled to find a way through a well-organised defence.

But the hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute when Selina Cerci won a penalty, with Mariona Caldentey keeping her cool from the spot to seal a 1-0 victory.

For Adam, however, the night marked a milestone that had been years in the making for a player whose football journey began on the dusty, uneven pitches of Likoni and Kilindini in the coastal Mombasa city.

Known as “Dogo”, Swahili for “little one” because of her small stature, she went on to establish herself as one of the leading women’s players on Kenya’s coast.

Her rise eventually took her from local pitches to the international stage and, in August 2024, to the United States, where she joined Kansas City Current and became the first Kenyan woman to play in the National Women’s Soccer League.

She later moved to Denmark, where she has established herself at HB Køge.

Adam made her move to the Danish club permanent in 2025 on a contract that runs until the summer of 2027.

The forward helped Køge complete their first Danish domestic double in the 2025/26 season, winning both the Danish championship and Danish Cup.

She has continued that form into the new campaign, with Køge sitting five points clear at the top of Denmark’s Elitedivisionen after eight matches, having won seven and lost one while scoring 24 goals and conceding eight.

Her form has also been recognised on the international stage. Adam was named Most Valuable Player at the 2026 Four Nations Tournament in Zambia, further underlining her growing influence for both club and country.

 Køge’s Champions League campaign began with qualification against PSV Eindhoven. They won the first leg 1-0 before drawing 1-1 in the return fixture to progress 2-1 on aggregate and earn a place in the league phase.

The Danish side are no strangers to Europe’s elite competition. They previously reached the Champions League group stage under the old format in 2021/22, when they faced Arsenal and suffered defeats in both meetings.

This time, Adam was on the pitch herself as Køge returned to Arsenal’s home turf.

And although a late penalty denied the Danes a point, the occasion gave the Kenyan forward a chance to measure herself against some of the biggest names in the women’s game.

Køge’s league fixtures will see them host Servette FCCF of Geneva on October 1, before further meetings with Barcelona and Benfica at home and Paris FC and OH Leuven away, alongside their trip to Arsenal.

 For Adam, the journey from the rough pitches of Mombasa and Kilifi to a Champions League night in London is another chapter in a career that continues to break new ground for Kenyan women’s football.
