Political parties represented in the National Assembly have until the close of business this Friday to submit nominees to serve on the impeachment committee of President Ramaphosa, state media SABC reports.
The Constitutional Court of South Africa ruled that Parliament should establish an impeachment committee for President Cyril Ramaphosa to answer to prima facie evidence about foreign currency stolen from his Phala Phala farm in 2020.
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has given direction for a process to constitute the impeachment committee to consider Section 89 inquiry process, SABC reports.
Ramaphosa has indicated that he plans to take the report under review.
Committee composition
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza met with chief whips of the different political parties today about the composition of the committee.
Parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says, “Following these engagements, political parties will be requested to submit the names of members who will serve on the committee to the National Assembly Secretariat by the close of business on Friday, 22 May 2026.
“In determining the composition of the Impeachment Committee, the Speaker considered not only the constitutional principle of proportional representation, but also the need for inclusivity and broad participation in this unprecedented parliamentary process.”
The committee will consist of 31 members.
