Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday reaffirmed his country’s support for Niger, its people and institutions following an attempt to destabilise the West African country.
Tebboune made the remarks during a phone call with Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani to discuss the situation in the country, according to a statement by the Algerian presidency.
“The president reaffirmed to his brother Abdourahamane Tiani that Algeria will always stand by brotherly Niger, its people and institutions and support it in all fields and under all circumstances,” the statement said.
Tebboune also congratulated Tiani on his efforts that “foiled the attempt to destabilise Niger.”
‘Fully under control’
Tiani, for his part, assured Tebboune that the situation was “fully under control” and thanked Algeria for standing by Niger and its people, according to the statement.
On Sunday, Algeria’s Defence Ministry announced that four Algerian military aircraft had arrived in Niamey “on a mission to support Niger’s army in confronting an attempt to destabilise the country.”
The recent unrest included attacks around Diori Hamani International Airport and Air Base 101, a strategic military facility in Niamey, as well as other sites in the capital.
Niger’s defence minister said military activity in Niamey had been brought under control and security forces had regained control of critical sites that were targeted.
