Emergency teams continue to search for bodies and wreckage.

The latest crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft, which killed all 25 people on board, has revealed an intriguing story, that of newly married pilot Ahamefule Man-Ugwueje.

Just about two weeks before his death, Man-Ugwueje held the hands of Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle as they stood before family and friends in Abuja, promising each other a future.

The wedding pictures of the two officers on 19 September were shared online and have now resurfaced.

Squadron Leader Man-Ugwueje was one of two co-pilots on NAF 931, an ATR-42 twin-engine turboprop on a "routine mission" from Benin to Lagos on Monday, 5 October. It crashed in a swampy area in the south-western state of Ondo.

He studied civil engineering at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, the country's top military training institution.

Local media reported that he took to the skies in 2018, when he was among 14 officers decorated with pilot wings after training in Nigeria and South Africa. He rose to squadron leader, equivalent to major in the army.

The wider picture was marked by confusion over the death toll. The presidency had said on Monday evening that 32 people, comprising 25 passengers and seven crew, were on board and had died.

Then on Tuesday, 6 October, the Nigerian Air Force revised the toll to 25, saying there were 20 passengers and five crew on board with no survivors.

Six names on the manifest bore no military rank. Defence Headquarters said some family members were on the aircraft.

President Bola Tinubu described the crash as "a painful moment" for the country, declared three days of mourning and ordered an investigation.

Emergency teams continue to search for bodies and wreckage. The cause is not yet known, but it adds to a string of crashes involving Nigerian Air Force aircraft.

For the Man-Ugwueje and Adekunle families, the loss carries a cruel symmetry.

The late Man-Ugwueje, reportedly in his 30s, was the son of a retired group captain.

According to local media, his wife is the daughter of the late Wing Commander E.O. Adekunle, one of 13 officers who died in a Nigerian Air Force Dornier 228 crash in Benue in 2006.

Two decades later, Damilola, who followed her father into the air force, has lost her husband in another military crash just after their wedding.
